About Us

James Chambers Timber Merchants was established in 1908 by Mr Chambers who operated out of a small timber yard connected to the Halifax High Level Way Railway Line, which enabled the company to transport its goods to customers in the local area. To this day James Chambers still operates from the same yard all be it on a much larger scale as an importer of timber and manufactured joinery products.

Over the past 102 years the company has seen some significant changes; most notably within the past 15 years James Chambers has seen significant investment in order to transform the company into a modern efficient organisation that uses modern technology and expertise to provide a top quality service.

Even though as a company James Chambers has seen many changes over the last century we have always maintained our core values which remain an important factor in how we do business.

Environmental Policy

At James Chambers we recognise that we have a responsibility to the environment, our customers, suppliers and staff to base our commercial activities on well - managed and sustainable forests. We are fully committed to purchasing all timber from legal sources and seeking evidence of compliance that they are operating in accordance with the laws of their country. We reservedly condemn the act of illegal logging and constantly remain informed of changes in international legislation. Here at James Chambers we have achieved Chain of Custody (CoC) to ensure that the products we sell meet the Government and C.P.E.T (Central Point of Expertise in Timber) policy and guidelines on sustainable forest management practice and are obtained from legal and sustainable forest sources. As part of this system we make a significant commitment to ensure compliance with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme of the

Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) criteria. As part of this system it is our policy to avoid using timber harvested from forest areas where traditional or civil rights are violated, timber harvested from non FSC - certified forest areas having high conservation values which are threatened, timber from genetically modified (GM) trees, illegally harvested timber and natural forest that has been converted to plantations or non forest use. We work closely with all our suppliers in order to encourage greater use of certified timber and timber products so that the continual improvement program of introducing more certified timber can be sustained.
